Elton John looks ahead to a “special occasion” at Stoke Park next week

18 June, 2014

In an exclusive interview, Sir Elton John CBE has spoken of his excitement about performing for SportsAid next week at what he says will be a “very special occasion”.

“Knowing that everyone will be there to help young people to achieve their ambitions will create a unique atmosphere,” he said.

“SportsAid has helped some of the UK’s most successful athletes and it is important to me that the next generation has the chance to achieve the same success.”

SportsAid: You were one of SportsAid’s first big supporters back in its founding years. How does it feel to be working with the charity again?

Elton: I was indeed – back when it was founded in the latter half of the 1970s. It’s great that I have been given the opportunity to work with SportsAid again, and show my support for a charity whose values are closely aligned with my own.

SportsAid: Why is the cause important to you?

Elton: The cause is important for many reasons. To be able to aid young athletes by giving them recognition and financial support during the critical formative years of their sporting journey is just fantastic. It’s key to help the next generation of our sporting nation, so we can continue to perform as well as we do now on the world stage.

SportsAid: Were you inspired by the success of London 2012?

Elton: ‘Being inspired’ almost feels underwhelming – I was utterly amazed at the achievements of Team GB and ParalymicsGB during the Games – it made me hugely proud to be British and it was a very special time for the country. It was also the catalyst for starting my own sports management company Rocket Sports Management.

SportsAid: The concert will make a big difference to the lives of young sports people right across the UK. Are you excited at the prospect of being able to follow their progress and see what they achieve?

Elton: Absolutely. The philosophy of being able to bring on new talent and then witness their growth, both in themselves and in their chosen disciplines, is a philosophy very close to my heart. As I do in all my work, I will be following their progress closely.

SportsAid: There’s another amazing summer of sport coming to the UK. Will you be trying to watch any of Wimbledon, the Tour de France Grand Depart and the Commonwealth Games?

Elton: As an avid sports fan, and a keen tennis player, I will be following all of them. It’s fantastic that the Tour is starting in the UK this year and another real boost for British cycling. Then, what with a home Games to enjoy in July and August, I think it’s going to be another very special summer of sport for the country.

SportsAid will be launching its new Elton John Sports Fund at the concert to help aspiring British athletes to achieve their ambitions. The fund will be supporting some of the country's most talented young sportsmen and women in the run up to Rio 2016, Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
