More than 300 athletes in Team GB have had support from SportsAid
11 Jul 2012
SportsAid is proud to announce that 308 of the 541 athletes who will represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games have received the charity’s support during their careers.
Following the British Olympic Association’s official entry of Team GB on July 9, SportsAid’s Chief Executive Tim Lawler commented, “This is a wonderful moment for all of the athletes who have been selected and a great moment for SportsAid. It has been a challenging journey for many of them and we are proud to have supported them along the way.
“In Beijing in 2008, 18 of the 19 gold medals won by Team GB went to athletes supported by SportsAid and we’d helped 46% of the British team. To see this increase to 57% in four years shows that SportsAid continues to back the right people at the right time. It reminds us of how important it is to give emerging talent the funding and recognition that they need to succeed. I wonder how many medallists it will be in London?”

SportsAid's Patron

As SportsAid’s patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge is helping to shine a light on the achievements and potential of young athletes throughout the UK – an inspiring generation who one day hope to represent the nation at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. SportsAid alumnus Sir Chris Hoy welcomed the patronage by saying, “SportsAid played an important role when I was starting out so I know what a huge boost this will be to the young sportsmen and women the charity helps today. As patron Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge will give them the profile they deserve.”
